Math Superstars

What is Math SuperStars?

Math SuperStars, also known as Sunshine Math, was developed by Florida’s Department of Education.  It is a voluntary enrichment program designed for self-motivated learners who can use higher-level thinking skills to solve challenging problems in mathematics.

How Does It Work?

  1. Each week the designated grade level worksheets must be downloaded from the school’s website.
  2. The student should complete the worksheets.
  3. The completed worksheets should be turned into the student’s teacher by the requested due date.
  4. The worksheets will be submitted to Mrs.Cave, who will check the worksheets, return them to the students, and track student participation.
  5. Kindergarten students should complete at least 8 of the 10 assignments.
  6. Students in first through sixth grade should complete at least 16 of the 20 assignments.
  7. The students who complete the necessary assignments will be invited to a special celebration at the end of each ten week period.

What is the Parent Role?

  1. Each problem is ranked according to its level of difficulty.  The number of stars beside a problem indicates the level of difficulty.  One star being the lowest level and four stars being the highest level.
  2. Most students will NOT be able to complete every problem on a worksheet.
  3. The parent’s role is to encourage and facilitate student problem solving.
  4. A parent may read a question to the student, listen as a student shares his thinking, suggest a strategy for problem solving, or offer counters or manipulatives.
  5. The parent is asked to not give the answers to the student. For the program to be effective, the thinking must be performed by the student.
