WCA School Uniform Information

Benefits of School Uniforms:

School uniforms have a positive effect on students and teachers!  School uniforms promote a single standard of dress.  Therefore, school environments become less competitive and more focused on learning.  Similarly, research has shown there is a link between students’ appearance and teachers’ expectations.  High expectations mean high achievement!
School uniforms boosts school spirit!  Helping to build a sense of community within the school, uniforms create an atmosphere of belonging.  The essence of unity can positively affect a child’s attitude toward school and can lead to better learning and improved attendance.  A child excited about school is a child ready to learn!
School uniforms promote a safe, healthy learning environment!  No doubt about it! Education professionals agree that a safe school environment is essential for learning to take place.  The safer the environment, the more likely children will attend.  Uniforms make it easier for school officials to identify non-students while promoting a safe and comfortable atmosphere.
School uniforms make mornings easier!  Uniforms eliminate the need to argue over what to wear to school everyday.  Through simplicity, uniforms promote time efficiency, organization and neatness.  Parents and students agree that getting the morning off right is the key to a productive and happy day.
School uniforms encourage individual self-expression.  With uniforms, students find ways to express themselves creatively, rather than through their clothes – through the arts, music, sports, personality and academic achievement.

Weddington Christian Academy Uniform Requirements
2008-2009 SCHOOL YEAR

The following is a description of the uniform requirements for all WCA students. Please read through this information carefully to familiarize yourself will all the requirements.

LOGO SHIRTS:  Logo shirts are a required item and are obtained locally by WCA through Western Associates, Inc. of Charlotte, NC.  Our representative is Sharon Gowitzka.  Western Associates takes care of all embroidery and screening needs for WCA.  WCA Polo shirts come in white, navy blue, hunter green and light blue.  The dress Chapel logo shirt and blouse are white.  Each spring after registration has taken place, we will conduct a fitting/ordering day for new and returning students. This year’s uniform day will be on Thursday, May 15.  Sample shirts will be on hand for your child to try on for sizing.  Existing students will also have opportunities throughout the school year to make shirt purchases.  Some items are available for purchase through the school office and will be available at the fitting day on a first come, first serve basis.  All other items require placing an order. Payment is due at the time or your order, payable by cash or check.  Items ordered at the fitting will arrive over the summer and will be available for pickup when we return to school in August.  A pickup date will be announced in the summer letter that all WCA families will receive.

OTHER UNIFORM PIECES: We have chosen Land’s End and French Toast companies for ordering uniform pieces.  Our school colors are khaki and navy blue.  This applies to all uniform pieces for boys and girls to include pants, shorts, skorts, skirts and jumpers.  French Toast has two plaid selections for girls that are approved.  Plaid jumpers previously purchased from Dennis Uniform are also still acceptable. The phase-out period for all other Dennis Uniform items has ended.  Shorts should be worn under skirts and jumpers for modesty.  Parents will receive catalogs from both companies that will have a WCA school code on the back.  Please use this code when ordering so that WCA gets credit for the purchase.  Both companies offer phone and online ordering.  A list of approved choices for WCA will be attached to your catalogs.  Please abide by WCA approved choices when ordering.  Cargo-style items should be reserved for NUTS day.  If you want to purchase uniforms from a local supplier due to special fitting needs, please stay within the approved school uniform colors and styles.  If you have questions, you are always welcome to contact the school office for more information.

REQUIRED LOGO ITEMS:

Weekly Chapel and Program Days – White oxford shirt for boys and Peter Pan collared shirt for girls. Girls should wear a jumper, skort, or skirt and boys should wear uniform pants or shorts. Regular Uniform Days – polo shirt/blouse with logo in school colors, in short or long sleeves, or mock neck logo shirt.  Plain sweaters or sweatshirts in school colors may be worn with the uniform.
Note about WCA t-shirts:  short sleeved t-shirts may be worn as part of the regular uniform through October 31st, and again in the Spring beginning March 1st.  Long sleeved t-shirts are for P.E. only.

DRESS CODE AND UNIFORM REQUIREMENTS:

Uniforms are required for all students. Complete uniforms are required Monday through Thursday.  Each Friday we will have NUTS day, or No Uniforms to School Day, during which students can wear casual school clothes of their choice.  The one exception will be an occasional Friday program day.  A complete uniform consists of:  a WCA logo shirt in the school colors of white, light blue, navy blue and hunter green; uniform pants or shorts for boys (khaki or navy) and uniform jumper, skort, skirt (khaki, navy blue or plaid), pants or shorts for girls.  Girls must wear shorts under skirts/jumpers for modesty. After October 31st, girls may continue to wear skorts, jumpers and skirts with knee socks or tights.

Wednesday Chapel and program days:  Uniform pants and white oxford logo shirt for boys and white logo Peter Pan collared dress blouse with a jumper/skirt/skort for girls.  Shirts/blouses may be short or long sleeved.  Solid, school color sweaters may be worn with their shirt or blouse during cool months.

P.E. Uniform – The P.E. uniform consists of a WCA logo t-shirt with navy blue sport length shorts for boys and girls.  For cool months students may wear the long sleeved WCA t-shirt with navy blue sweat or sport pants.  A solid color sweatshirt may also be worn over the t-shirt.  A comfortable pair of tennis shoes must be worn for P.E. class. Students must wear appropriate shoes in order to participate.

OTHER DRESS CODE REQUIREMENTS:  On NUTS days (Fridays), please use common sense and good judgment in making clothing selections.  We want to have fun on NUTS days but still look nice.  No clothing with holes, especially jeans, and no spaghetti straps unless matching cover-up shirt is worn.  No tank tops, midriff-type shirts or see-through blouses or shirts. No low-rider or hip hugger jeans.  When students bend over playing this is embarrassing for them.  Commercially themed attire should be in good taste.  It is important to put your child’s name on all clothing items including sweatshirts, sweaters and jackets in case they are misplaced.  A lost and found box will be kept in the office.  Unclaimed items will be kept for a reasonable amount of time.  After that, unclaimed items will be donated to charity.  We want to adhere closely to our school dress code so that our primary focus continues to be learning and academics.  As the first teachers of your children, kindly guide and check your child as they dress for school each day.  In enforcement of our dress code, parent cooperation is essential.  All parents can help strengthen the school’s dress code policy since the teachers’ first responsibility is instruction.

Shirts:  Shirts should be tucked in if there is a shirt tail.  If shirt is cut straight across with a finished edge, it is not necessary for shirt to be tucked in.  Belts are optional.

Shoes:  Comfortable shoes like tennis shoes, full sandals with a back buckle or clasp, loafers, or other full soft-soled shoes.  Rubber boots, cowboy boots, flip-flops, backless clogs or sandals, dress shoes and any other backless shoes are not acceptable.  Shoes with wheels are not permitted.

Socks:  Comfortable socks in solid colors are preferred.  Socks for girls may be ankle or knee length.  Suggested colors are navy, white, light blue, tan or green.

Coats/Sweaters:  Any color is acceptable.  We ask that you put your child’s name on the inside tag in case it is misplaced, since many students come with similar types of jackets and sweaters.   Sweatshirts in solid school colors may be worn during the winter months.

Compliance with dress code: In order to assist in the compliance of the dress code, WCA has adopted the following schedule of reprimands:

  1. First three offenses – note home to parents.
  2. Fourth offense – phone call to parents.
  3. Fifth offense – parent may be required to come to school to correct the offense.

We realize that there may be a unique situation that would require understanding and latitude.  If deemed necessary, there will be intervention by administrator or teacher.  Administrator has authority in these situations to act accordingly.  In some cases, a substitution may need to be made temporarily.
